Local School Options
A number of education alternatives are available for school-age children in Alamance County. In addition to the public school system, selection ranges from charter schools, to non-public and independent schools.
The Alamance-Burlington School System provides quality public education to more than 23,000 students PreK-12 making it the sixteenth largest public school district in North Carolina. The system serves the entire county with twenty elementary schools, seven middle schools, nine high schools including a middle college option, a career and technical education center, and an alternative learning center.
There are three Charter Schools located in Alamance County. Clover Garden School and River Mill Academy serve students grades K-12. The Hawbridge School serves student in grades 6-12. There are approximately 1300 students enrolled in charter schools.
There are a number of non-public and independent school options available. They include the Providence Montessori School serving students PreK-12, the Children’s House Montessori School serving students PreK-6, the Bradford Academy serving students K-6, Blessed Sacrament serving students PreK-8, Alamance Christian School, Burlington Christian Academy serving students in grades PreK-12 and The Burlington School, the only Preschool 3-12 independent school in Alamance County.

Post-Secondary
Opened in 1958, Alamance Community College has been a staple of education in the community. There are approximately 6,200 students enrolled in curriculum programs such as biotechnology, culinary arts, medical assisting, nursing, automotive services, air conditioning and college transfer courses. Also important are the adult high school, GED and basic skills programs, short-term classes for job skill development, continuing education classes, the Small Business Center, and college credit classes for high school students.
Elon University is recognized as a national model for engaged learning, with renowned programs in international study and community service. Elon emphasizes an excellent foundation in liberal arts and sciences along with nationally-accredited professional programs in the schools of business, communications, education, law and health sciences. Elon’s 6,000 students come to North Carolina from 49 states and 49 other countries, creating an academic community of global citizens and leaders motivated by concern for the common good.
Several major public and private universities are within easy driving distance including Duke University, NC A&T, NC State University, North Carolina Central University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, UNC-Greensboro, and Wake Forest University. Learn more at Find Your Center NC
